Teenage Circumcision – Getting Circumcised as an Older Boy

Sometimes, circumcision is prescribed as treatment for phimosis or other conditions that may be causing problems as a youth matures. In these cases, the decision to undergo circumcision is driven by the need to address a medical issue.

At Comfort Procedures, we also routinely offer the procedure for older boys age 12 and up. No medical referral is required to schedule the procedure at our clinic, although your primary care doctor may refer you to us.

There are several potential benefits to getting circumcised as a child or teenager. These include:

• reduced risk of penile cancer,
• lower risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) through sexual contact, such as HIV/AIDS.
• lower risk of developing a urinary tract infection, which can affect the bladder, kidneys, or the tubes that carry urine out of the body.
• no more risk of infection of the foreskin.
• phimosis prevention  (a condition in which the foreskin is too tight and becomes stuck to the penis) 

This information is intended to help you understand what to expect during the circumcision procedure and recovery period, and to assist you in preparing for your son’s surgery. The more you and your son understand about the procedure, the more comfortable you will feel during and after the surgery.

It is important to follow your doctor’s instructions about taking or stopping medications before surgery, including over-the-counter supplements or painkillers which may cause bleeding. It is also a good idea to talk to your son about the surgery, explaining that it will only involve removing the skin that comes down over the head of the penis.

Older boys will understand more complex explanations, while younger children will benefit from a simpler explanation of the reasons for the surgery.

It is important to plan for your child’s recovery time after the circumcision procedure. He may or may not want you to be present during the surgery; however, you are welcome to be in the room to offer emotional support.  He may need more of your attention and care during the first few days after the surgery.  Most children will be able to return to school or daycare within 2-3 days after the surgery.

To help your child pass the time during the procedure, we encourage you to have him bring a book or device that will allow him to play games or watch a video as a distraction.

It is important to remember that a parent or legal guardian must accompany your child to the clinic and to give your written permission for the procedure. If both parents will not be present, you will need to provide written permission from the absent parent if there is legal custody, indicating agreement to proceed with the planned surgery.

After the circumcision procedure, some discomfort is expected once the local anesthetic wears off; however, over-the-counter pain relievers will manage any pain or discomfort. Our doctor will provide full post-operative care instructions, including details on how to properly use and regulate the dosage of any prescribed or recommended pain medication.

It is important to carefully follow all post-operative instructions to ensure a smooth recovery.

Circumcision for youth and teens will involve a short period of reduced activity during the recovery process. After the surgery, your son will leave the clinic for about an hour to have lunch or run an errand, then return for a post-operative check to ensure there is no unusual post-operative bleeding .  Our team will provide written and verbal instructions on how to care for your son after the circumcision. We will also offer extended guidance and follow-up during a several-week recovery period to ensure a smooth and successful outcome.
