Dr. McAuliff provides circumcision for infants, babies, and children from newborn to puberty at our clinic. Our standard of care includes multiple local anesthetic methods, but for children 2 years and older, we can offer a mild oral sedative to reduce anxiety.

Our method uses a bandaid closure instead of standard stitches, resulting in excellent cosmetic results without the normal suture marks on the mucosa and skin. The glue technique also heals 10 times faster and significantly reduces discomfort during the surgery. This allows the doctor to complete the surgery more quickly.

Circumcision is a Personal Matter

Many families choose to have their boys circumcised due to cultural and religious beliefs. Both Islam and Judaism support circumcision for boys, and many of the circumcisions performed at our Richardson Circumcision Clinic fall into this category.

It is easy and safe to continue family traditions at our circumcision clinic. If you have any questions, you are welcome to contact us at any time before or after your son’s procedure.

What are the benefits of circumcision for children and adolescents?

There are some potential benefits from getting circumcised as a child or teenager.
Here are some examples:

• While penile cancer risk is already quite low, circumcision can further reduce the risk.
• Boys and men who are circumcised have a reduced chance of getting a sexually transmitted disease such as HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), the virus that causes AIDS.
• Studies show a slightly lower risk of a urinary tract infection among circumcised males.
• Circumcision eliminates the concern of infection of the foreskin.
• Circumcision eliminates the possibility of phimosis — a tight foreskin that restricts contraction.

The Circumcision Procedure for Young Boys

Performing circumcision on young boys is routine at our male clinic in Richardson. We understand that the surgery can cause anxiety for both the child and the parents, so we ensure open communication before and after the operation. Below is an overview of the procedure, and Dr. McAuliff is available to answer any questions you may have.

This information will give you a better understanding of the procedure and set expectations for your child’s surgery. The more you and your son know about the procedure, the more comfortable you will be during and after. It is important to have an open and honest conversation with your son about the surgery. You can explain that we will remove the skin from the head of his penis. While older boys will understand this, it may be best to provide a simpler explanation for younger children.

Follow-up from our clinic before circumcision

You will receive a phone call the day before your child’s circumcision appointment to confirm the time and date of the surgery and answer any questions.

Please follow all instructions given to you regarding any medications your child should take or stop before surgery, including over-the-counter supplements and painkillers.

The day of surgery

Please make sure your son has had a bath or shower before the appointment. You may bring a favorite small toy or stuffed animal for younger children to make them feel more comfortable. Older boys getting circumcised may prefer a book or music player to keep them occupied during the procedure.

A parent or legal guardian must be present with the child at the clinic. If both parents cannot be present at the time of the surgery, we will require written permission from the absent parent stating that they are aware of the operation and agree to have it done.

Anaesthetic prior to circumcision

Your son will receive a local anesthetic injection near the base of the penis to numb the area during the procedure. The circumcision involves removing the foreskin from the head of the penis (glans). The surgery typically only takes a few minutes. Your son will remain awake during the procedure, but they should not experience any pain.

It is normal for them to feel anxious during the injection, but we will reassure them that they will not feel much additional discomfort during the procedure once the anesthetic has been administered.

Post-circumcision pain-killers

Following the circumcision procedure, your son may experience some discomfort as the local anesthetic wears off. This is normal and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications as directed by our staff. We will provide you with detailed post-operative care instructions to help ensure a smooth recovery.

After a Boy’s Circumcision

After a circumcision, boys who are older will need to have a period of reduced activity to allow for recovery. Your son will be able to leave the clinic a few hours after the surgery. We will provide you with written and verbal instructions on how to care for your son following the circumcision and will also offer follow-up guidance as needed.

Recovery period post circumcision

It is important to plan ahead for your child’s recovery after circumcision. Your child may need increased attention and care immediately following the surgery for comfort. It is expected that your child will be out of school or daycare for 2-3 days after the procedure. While every child is different, you may want to be available to support your son during this time. Keep in mind that each child’s recovery can vary, so it is important to follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider and to seek medical attention if any concerns arise.

Promote healing

The goal of the healthcare team is to minimize your son’s discomfort and help him heal as quickly as possible. We will provide you with instructions on how to minimize the risk of infection and will also explain the warning signs to look out for in case of any complications. If you have any questions or concerns after the surgery, Dr. McAuliff is available by phone and will respond promptly. Our priority is ensuring the best possible outcome for your son.

A few days of rest

You can expect to be at the clinic for an additional 2-4 hours after the surgery before your son is released. It is important to encourage your son to rest on the first day after the procedure, and most boys are able to be more active the following day. However, it is important to follow the doctor’s instructions about returning to more vigorous activities, such as sports, running, and physical education. We will provide you with information about caring for your child after the surgery and Dr. McAuliff will let you know when it is safe for your child to resume normal activities.

When should you call the clinic?
